The day of fools…
The day of fools marked on first of April, is considered one of the most cheerful holidays. About its origin the little is known. Some consider that celebrating of day of fools is connected with season change, others believe that it coherently with calendar change. For example, Romans and Hindus celebrated the ancient people New year about April, 1st, right after a spring equinox (on March, 20-21th). In medieval years on March, 25th that in a new fashion to a calendar - the beginning of April, at many European countries new year began. In 1582 Pope Grigory XIII has created a new calendar (Gregorian) which has replaced existing at that time julian calendar. According to a new calendar new year began to celebrate on January, 1st. Same year France has accepted the corrected calendar and began to mark new year already on a new calendar, on January, 1st. However many people did not wish to change the traditions and consequently continued to celebrate New year on April, 1st. Adherents of new style have started to play a trick on these traditionals, sent them «senseless commissions», forcing them to believe in any lie. And there was a day of fools. But very few people trusts in this history. First, how calendar change in France can concern all countries of the world? After all in England the Gregorian calendar have accepted only in 1752 while day of fools was celebrated in this country any more the first year. Secondly, there are no historical evidences of this fact, only guesses as which it is impossible to consider plausible. Other explanation about an origin of day of fools was offered by the professor of history from Bostansky university Joseph Boskin. He considers that this holiday has appeared during Konstantin’s reign when the group of court clowns and fools convinced the Roman emperor that they can correct is better any tsar empire. For fun Konstantin has resolved there is nobody the clown by name of Kugel per day to occupy its throne and to supervise over the country. In day of board Kugel has published the decree about that this day was considered as day of nonsense and since then this tradition has started to be marked annually. “In certain respects”, Professor Boskin has explained, “it there was very serious day. In those days fools were really wise people. After all they managed to tell usual events in the veiled form of jokes». In 1983 many newspapers have approved this explanation and have published it in the numbers. Only later they have learnt that steels victims of an April Fools’ deceit. It is necessary to notice that day of fools is celebrated all over the world approximately at the same time - in April. As it is known, on March, 25th (on new style on April, 1st) Romans organised festival Hilarija devoted to revival of young guy Atisa, loved goddesses Sibelly. In the early spring Hindus celebrate “Holi”, and Jews - “Purim”. Possibly, transition from severe winter by the spring at the ancient people associated with something joyful and cheerful.
